A Child-friendly Environment Was Arranged at the Western Unit of the Investigative Department of the State Inspector’s Service

Child victims and witnesses participating in criminal proceedings need special environment and approach oriented on their interests. To protect children from further traumatization and re-victimization, it is important that process of interviewing the children and other investigative/procedural actions are conducted in a space tailored to the interests of the minors. It is especially important when a minor speaks about psychological or physical abuse against him.

The first special space tailored to the interests of the child in the State Inspector’s Service was arranged at the Western Unit of the Investigative Department. Alignment and equipment of the room minimizes the number of people in contact with the child during the interview, ensures protection of confidentiality and creates less stressful and safe environment for the minor.

It should be mentioned that 3 % of the criminal cases under the Investigative Department of the State Inspector’s Service are related to the illegal actions against minors. It is extremely important for the State Inspector’s Service to support development of the system oriented on the minor’s genuine interests.

To that end, only specialized investigators participate in investigative and procedural activities involving minors. Additionally, the Service actively ensures participation of minors’ psychiatrists in the process of investigation.

The process of arranging child-friendly environment will continue in other offices of the State Inspector’s Service.
